Canadians are mourning this Saturday following the tragic news that long-time Conservative MP Deepak Obhrai passed away on Friday night. In a statement, it was announced that Obhrai died after his battle with liver cancer at the age of 69. Since the announcement, many policial leaders and fellow Canadians are sending their condolences at this time.

Obhrai was a representative from the Calgary Forest Lawn and was an MP for twenty-two years. Well respected throughout the nation, Obhrai was the longest-serving Conservative parliamentarian.

He served under Harper's government and was known to constantly stand up for people, especially immigrants. On top of this, Obhrai was the first person of colour to lead the Conservative party and helped to pave the way for people of colour in the political sector, according to CBC

In a statement that was released by Obhrai's family on Saturday morning, they recall that not only was Obhrai an amazing political leader, but also a beloved father to his children.

According to CBC, Obhrai was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer just a few weeks before his death and his illness was considered 'brief and aggressive.' His family states that they are still in shock from his sudden death.

Since the news has traveled throughout the nation, many Canadians are mourning his loss, including Conservative leader Andrew Scheer.

In a statement, Scheer states that he is heartbroken to learn about the loss of Obhrai. Scheer states that "Deepak was a constant source of joy inside the Conservative caucus. He brightened every room he walked into and often injected warmth, kindness, and good humor into our deliberations."

Of course, many Canadians are following suit, and social media is filling with grievances from the nation.

Obhrai was first elected as a Reform MP for Calgary-East in 1997 and has served multiple roles throughout the years, including parliamentary secretary for foreign affairs, international human rights, and international co-operation.
