Everyone is being extra careful these days, and businesses are no exception. The spread of COVID-19 in Canada has prompted extra safety precautions everywhere. Sobeys is the latest business to promise customers and employees more measures to combat the virus.

Michael Medline, the company's president and CEO outlined all of the new additions to their stores in a letter posted on the Sobeys Twitter account on March 20.

Among them is the addition of plexiglass shields at the checkouts to protect cashiers from possibly getting the virus through continuous contact with customers.

Other steps being taken include having employees wash their hands every 15 minutes, having surfaces at checkouts wiped down more often, and even placing markers on the floor to help people maintain a two-metre distance from each other.

Store hours will also be reduced, with locations staying open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. This is to allow for more sanitization and extra time to re-stock empty shelves.

These new measures and restrictions will be put in place along with other steps the company has already taken.

These include no longer selling bulk and baked goods in self-serve areas, cancelling product demos, and introducing a seniors shopping hour at the beginning of each day.

In addition, the company is telling any employees who are sick to stay home.

They have also implemented recommended procedures for any employees who have been out of the country or been in contact with someone who has.

"I'm proud of the positive feedback and words of gratitude that you have been giving our teammates in the store these last few days," Medline wrote. He also extended thanks to the store, distribution, and transportation staff at Sobeys.

He concluded with a hopeful message, writing "Together, we will all get through this."
