In amazing news for the science community, the first ever images of a black hole were released this morning. In less scientific news, people actually think the black hole looks like a donut. The groundbreaking picture of the black hole was made public this morning and since then has been going viral.
The photo was released by a team of astronomers who use the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) to capture the first ever picture of a black hole. That team included one scientist from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Avery Broderick, who told CBC that the new photos have made the black hole real.
Prior to this image, black holes had never been captured because they usually can't be seen. This particular one is located in the M87 galaxy, about 50 million light years from earth. The picture shows a burning orange circle around some sort of round, black silhouette.
Thanks to the internet, the black hole photo has gone viral. In doing so, it has created a big question on the internet of what do people see when they look at this picture. Despite it being a black hole, people actually think it looks like donut instead. Even Tim Hortons, Canada's unofficial authority on donuts agree.
In a tweet this morning, Tim Hortons shared a photo and article from CNN of the black hole adding two simple words, "Looks Glazed." With this tweet, they officially confirmed that the black hole looks like a donut. They aren't the only one though.
People who have seen the pic online have all come one conclusion, it looks like a glazed donut.
Some people are even theorizing and joking that the whole black hole thing is a fake and that it's legitimately just a photo of a glazed donut.
Of course, now people are craving donuts because of it too.
Whatever it looks like, rest assured, this picture is legitimately a black hole. As far as science is concerned, this is an amazing accomplishment. Nonetheless, Tim Hortons should definitely come out with a black hole donut now.
