New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh made headlines earlier this week, when it was revealed that pop-goddess Rihanna had become one of his 320,000 followers on Instagram. Shortly after, Canadian rap-sensation Drake also joined the NDP leaders’ following, which is pretty much as good as things could possibly get in terms of celebrity endorsements!
Now, Jagmeet Singh has revealed that his interaction with Rihanna actually went one step further than just following one another on social media, as he confirmed that they have actually already DM'ed on Instagram!
Just one day after delivering some hilarious one-liners at the federal leaders’ debate, Singh appeared on the Canadian talk show, The Social. Speaking to the hosts, Singh explained that it was his wife, Gurkiran Kaur Sidhu, who first let him know about his new followers.
Singh confirmed that he had been following Rihanna on Instagram for quite some time, and learning that she had followed him back was an "awesome" moment. When one of the hosts asked Singh if the two could now DM one another, Singh explained that they already had!
From the offset, Singh said that he “didn’t want to disclose” exactly what the two of them had spoken about, but did say that he’d thanked Rihanna for her support and told her he was “honoured by the follow.”
He also added that Rihanna did actually take the time to respond to his message.
After Singh revealed that he had slid into Rihanna’s DMs on Instagram, Canadians were quick to respond with jokes and comments on Twitter.
One person tweeted, “Jagmeet sliding into Rihanna’s DMs is the scoop of this election. Elect this man!”
Another shared a similar post, writing, “Singh slid into Rihanna's DMs. He is officially the millennial candidate.”
It seems that the ladies at The Social are experts at drawing out juicy information from political candidates, as they also managed to get some secrets out of Conservative leader Andrew Scheer earlier this month.
Scheer revealed to the panel that he was actually a champion baker, and had won pie contests in Saskatchewan as a youngster!
Whether or not Drake and Rihanna's support will have any bearing when Canadians head to the polls remains to be seen.
However, this kind of celebrity support just weeks before the election is probably not a bad thing at all!
