On the same day that thousands of Canadians will march as part of Greta Thunberg’s Global Climate Strike, Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party have announced a new plan to plant 2 billion trees in Canada, if they are elected next month. While Trudeau’s initial announcement tweet was met with a positive reaction from Canadians, it wasn’t long before Jagmeet Singh got involved, and what happened next was pretty awkward!

Ahead of the climate marches across Canada today, the Prime Minister spoke to the media in Montreal. Announcing the Liberal Party’s latest promise to plant 2 billion trees in Canada if elected, Trudeau explained, "If it seems ambitious and bold, that's because it is."

In a confident tweet to follow up this announcement, Justin Trudeau wrote, “We’ll plant 2 billion trees over the next ten years. That’s it. That’s the tweet.”

While Trudeau’s tweet was initially met with plenty of positivity from Canadians in the replies, it didn’t take long before National Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh got involved, and he ended up making the situation considerably more awkward!

Responding directly to Justin Trudeau’s tweet, Singh retweeted it and added the caption, “Trees won’t hide the pipeline you bought.”

Naturally, Canadians were quick to respond to the NDP leader’s tweet, with many using "memes" to show how they were feeling.

One user added, "THAT'S IT. THAT'S THE TWEET!"

This isn’t the first time that Jagmeet Singh’s "burns" have been recognized and appreciated by Canadians. Earlier this month, Singh did not hold back during the Maclean’s leaders’ debates and ripped into his fellow candidates on several occasions.

His quick wit and amusing comments went down pretty well with Canadians, as one person tweeted at the time, “Jagmeet Singh is my hero.”

Despite their tree-planting differences, Jagmeet Singh joins Justin Trudeau and Elizabeth May today, marching for climate justice across Canada.
