A Maple Syrup War Just Broke Out Between 2 Provinces & It Couldn't Be More Canadian
It's a sticky situation.
Ontario and New Brunswick are in a bit of a sticky situation over some major bragging rights and it's just so Canadian. Maple syrup in Canada has led the two provinces to battle it out over claims of who's the second-biggest producer of the sweet stuff. Hopefully, this feud doesn't come to a boil!
Canada is the world's largest producer of maple syrup with Quebec as the province that gets the top spot.
In TV ads, the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers' Association claims the second spot when it comes to making the sappy stuff.
The ad asks, "did you know Ontario is Canada's second-largest maple syrup producer?"
According to the CBC, the ads are mostly airing in Ontario but they have been broadcast nationally on some channels.
This claim doesn't sit well with New Brunswick and has led to some sparring between the two provinces.
"I don't know what Ontario had to gain from this. I do not see where it comes from," Louise Poitras, the executive director of the New Brunswick Maple Syrup Association, told the CBC.
Ray Bonenberg of the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers’ Association explained the ad to The Canadian Press and said it was produced when the 2018 figures were the most recent ones.
According to Statistics Canada, the true north produced 9,796,000 gallons of the maple treat that year, with 465,000 coming from Ontario and 361,000 coming from New Brunswick.
However, last year New Brunswick beat out Ontario by just under 100,000 gallons of the sweet, sticky stuff.
That's why New Brunswick isn't giving up.
"We are number two and we aim to stay that way," said Poitras.
Ontario is a little more reluctant to participate in the maple syrup war though.
Bonenberg said that there was never any intent to deceive people with the ad and that there's no competition.
The emphasis is solely on marketing Canadian maple syrup, he said.
For New Brunswick, their claim to syrup fame isn't just about how much it produces.
Moncton is actually the only municipality in the country to have its.
While the battle for second place continues, Quebec is sitting pretty, producing 90% of Canada's maple syrup for the last two years.
