Newfoundland Is Going To Be In 2020 Before The Rest Of Canada
They'll be the first in a new decade!
The world is entering an entirely new decade tonight, and there are plenty of celebrations happening everywhere. Canada will see a big New Year's party take place in Ottawa, as well as other major cities, but one part of Canada's Atlantic region will hit 2020 before anywhere else. Newfoundland's New Year's celebration will take place in St. John's before any other part of Canada.
What's most significant about hosting New Year's Eve celebrations in Newfoundland is that the province will actually enterbefore the rest of the country does.
This is due to the fact that Newfoundland, unlike the other provinces on the East Coast, actually has its own time zone. The province is half an hour ahead of the Atlantic time zone. That means Newfoundland will spend 30 minutes in 2020 before anywhere else catches up to it.
CBC will be broadcasting the nation-wide New Year's celebration from Quidi Vidi Village in St. John's.will be hosting all of the on-air fun. Apparently, it was his idea to do the celebration from this small corner of Newfoundland.
"I was desperate to be at Mallard Cottage," Mercer told CBC News, "So when they asked me this year to host, I said 'yes, but I want to be in Mallard Cottage.'"
Mallard Cottage isin Quidi Vidi Village. Constructed in the 18th century, the cottage was originally the home of the Mallard fishing family, who lived there into the 1980s. It is now an award-winning restaurant and inn.
The New Year's celebration is also set to feature musical performances by Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea and Canadian folk group The Dardanelles, among others.
Of course, no New Year's Eve celebration would be complete without fireworks, which will also be featured in Quidi Vidi Village.
