Yet another deadly shooting took place in the GTA on Sept. 14 near an apartment complex in Mississauga. A 17-year-old boy was left dead and five others were injured after multiple suspects opened fire in a parkette. The Mississauga shooting is being investigated by the police.
According to the Mississauga Police, the shooting was carried out by multiple individuals all armed with "semi-automatic weapons." Peel Police Chief Chris McCord told multiple news outlets that the 17-year-old victim died at the scene while police attempted life-saving measures. "We would like to extend our condolences to the family," McCord said, according to CP24.
Four of the injured parties were also minors. Two 17-year-olds, along with a 16-year-old and 13-year-old were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries. A 50-year-old woman was also injured in the shooting. McCord told the press that one of the victims is in life-threatening condition, but did not specify which one, according to CBC News.
While McCord indicated that it did not seem the suspects would return, he did note that there is a "concern for public safety," according to CBC. Multiple shell casings were found in the area, and there were vehicles with bullet holes at the scene. Police spokesperson Iryna Yashnyk told reporters, "It is a large scene and a very dynamic investigation."
Mississauga mayor Bonnie Crombie said in a statement that she was "deeply shocked and saddened" by the shooting. "I want to extend my sincere thanks to our first responders who quickly responded to the scene," Crombie said.
Crombie also offered her "thoughts and prayers" to the victims and urged anyone with information to contact the police as soon as possible. She also said, "I am committed to ensuring Mississauga remains one of the safest cities by working to get illegal guns off our streets."
According to CBC, investigators had been informed that a music video was being filmed in the parkette during the time of the shooting. However, they do not know if the two events are related in any way.
