Ontario Provincial Police have been forced to close all of the lanes of the busy 401 Highway, for the second time in just one day. Roads have been closed between Shannonville Road and Marysville Road in Tyendinaga Township, Ontario, following a serious, five-vehicle collision on the 401 in the eastbound lanes.

According to initial reports from the scene, at least five vehicles were involved in the accident on the 401 Highway, and one woman is reported to have been killed as a result of the crash. Her family are believed to be present at the scene.

Two Ornge helicopters were initially requested at the scene of the collision, but both were later cancelled, and land ambulances are now present.

Traffic in the eastbound lanes is at a complete standstill, and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reporting that the road closures that are in place are expected to last between six and eight hours. Police are urging Ontario motorists to completely avoid the area if possible, or travel on the emergency detour routes.

Alternative routes have been arranged through Marysville Road to Deseronto Road, then south back to Highway 401.

As if this crash isn't bad enough, the nightmare on Highway 401 only gets worse, as police are also having to deal with motorists going the wrong way down the highway to avoid the terrible traffic.

In a tweet, the OPP East said, “If you are caught in the traffic backlog DO NOT DRIVE THE WRONG WAY ON THE HIGHWAY. Officers will work to help drivers get off the road as quickly and safely as possible.”

This latest collision comes only moments after Ontario Provincial Police cleared another serious accident on the same highway, that occurred earlier on Friday morning.

The first collision, which is reported to have happened around 5 a.m., also closed the eastbound lanes of the busy 401 Highway. The road was clear again by 3:30 p.m., just minutes before the second incident took place.
