We’ve all seen the the confused/angry/sad white cat meme on all our Instagram feeds. What we didn’t know is that the little guy's name is Smudge, and he’s actually a Canadian. Smudge the cat is arguably one of the biggest social media sensations to have come out of Ottawa, and he’s become one of the most-used memes on the internet!
For those of you that don’t know, the famous “woman yelling at a cat” meme, and the viral "cat meme” are kinda the same thing, and they both feature the same sad little kitty.
The first meme is actually a collage of two photos, one woman yelling, and the sad-looking white animal sitting in front of some vegetables. The other meme is the same, just without the screaming woman.
For internet reasons that will probably never make any sense, these images are now super famous and are much-loved and well-used across social media.
While it's almost impossible not to know this viral sensation, what we didn’t know is that this famous little pet is actually Canadian, and he lives with his family in Ottawa!
The adorable little guy actually has his own Instagram page, and more than 1.2 million followers keep up with his Ottawa-based adventures.
Smudge’s owners told CBC news that the meme was born back in 2018 when he was sitting at the table in their suburban Ottawa home.
"He eats dinner at our table. He gets really upset if he doesn't have a chair," said Miranda Stillabower.
"Someone got up from dinner and he must have thought, 'Oh, this is my chair,' and he sat there. My brother's girlfriend took the picture," she explained.
"I don't know why he was making that face, but it's the best thing he's ever done," Stillabower added.
She posted the picture on her Tumblr blog, where it was eventually shared tens of thousands of times.
By 2019, Smudge's picture was given a new lease of life when someone combined it with another popular meme: the angry woman from the Real Housewives reality TV series.
"I think the original photo is [popular] because he looks so dissatisfied with the plate of salad, then [the pairing] looks kind of like an argumentative setup, which is why it's worked so well," Stillabower told CBC News.
Like a truly viral sensation, the popular pet has capitalized on his fame and now has his very own Instagram account.
With more than 1.2 million active followers on the social media platform, Smudge the cat from Kanata actually has around half of the followers of Justin Trudeau — the actual Prime Minister!
That said, Smudge isn't the only famous feline in Ottawa. The iconic "Sandman Cat" from the viral TikTok video is also an Ottawa resident, and he has more than 10 million views, too!
Thankfully, Stillabower confirmed that the internet fame isn’t getting to Smudge’s head. "He's just a cat, as amazing as he is. He has no idea he's famous. He goes about his daily life and it's normal, then you go online and he's everywhere. That's when it starts to be crazy."
