The Toronto Raptors and Drake are pretty much joined at the hip at this point. The rapper, who currently holds the title of Global Ambassador for the team, was awarded last night with a custom-made Raptors/OVO jacket. The one-of-a-kind Drake Raptors jacket has an estimated value of a whopping $769,000, thanks to its luxe fabric and diamond embellishments.
So, what the occasion? This actually isn’t the first time that the team has given their ambassador a custom jacket as a gift. According to the Toronto Star, over the last four years, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MSLE) have awarded the Toronto artist with several stunning pieces of merchandise. However, despite the tradition, this year was definitely special. The organization really had to step up their game after Drake renovated the Raptors' practice centre and renamed it the OVO Athletic Centre back in March. He even has his own key to the building.
Drake had carefully avoided donning his usual Raptors gear during the team's previous playoff series against Philadelphia, in an effort to weaponize the “Drake curse” against the 76ers. The rapper was seen sporting a pair of Sixers shorts during game seven of the Eastern Conference playoff semifinals, which some superstitious fans believe helped the Raptors defeat their opponents 92-90
But, Drake likely won't hesitate to wear his bedazzled new Raptors jacket. Here's what it looks like:
Fan reactions to the jacket were mixed. Some were impressed by it and thought it was the perfect gift for the team's ambassador. However, there were also fans who believed that the jacket was a waste of money and couldn’t be better spent on something else, especially considering the fact that Drake is already incredibly wealthy:
The Raptors are scheduled to face off against the Milwaukee Bucks for game five this Thursday, in what is sure to be an exciting matchup.
