Earlier today, news broke that Hamilton Police charged a former Ontario baseball coach for sexually assaulting two teens within the city. According to the Hamilton Police, Leonard Bekendam, the 61-year-old Ontario man who was a former baseball coach and was also part of the Brant County Police Services Board in 2004, allegedly offered teens weed before sexually assaulting his victims on multiple occasions. Police are warning that there may be other victims within the city that have still not come forward.
This morning, Hamilton Police issued a news release which stated that police received information that on March 26, 2019, a youth attended a Central Hamilton address to receive cannabis from Bekendam. Once arriving though, the teen was sexually assaulted.
During this investigation, Hamilton Police discovered that the youth had been sexually assaulted on multiple occasions from December 2017 to May 2018, and another youth had also been sexually assaulted during that time.
The two teens who have been involved in this investigation have not been identified. Yet police officials told CBC that these two victims were 14 and 15-years-old.
Since his arrest, Bekendam has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.
However, this isn't the first time that Bekendam has been charged with sexual assault.
According to The Brandford Expositor, Bekendam was also charged with five counts of sexual exploitation 2013. He was also charged with attempting to obtain sexual services from a minor and trafficking in controlled substances.
These charges were said to have involved ten separate victims who were assaulted by Bekendam between 1981 and 2010. The Expositor states that Bekendam would use his authoritative figure to lure youth, mainly young males, into secluded areas where he would then sexually assault them.
Hamilton Police are asking anyone who has additional information on the case to contact the Child Abuse Unit at 905-546-3855. You may also call anonymously at Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at crimestoppershamilton.com
