As people across Canada are in mourning, the Prime Minister met with some of those affected by the tragedy that killed 63 Canadians. Iran plane crash victims' families had private meetings with Justin Trudeau in Toronto. These closed-door meetings with families come less than a day after he said intelligence suggested the plane had been shot down.

According to the Prime Minister's itinerary, on January 10 he met with the families of the victims who perished in the Iran plane crash that killed all people on board.

The private meetings were being held behind closed doors in Toronto with no media allowed in.

Trudeau had previously expressed his condolences in a statement about the crash.

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to those who have lost family, friends, and loved ones in this tragedy," he said. "We also join with the other countries who are mourning the loss of citizens."

Now he's sitting down face-to-face with those who are grieving the loss of loved ones.

On the night of January 9, before heading off to Toronto for the meetings, Trudeau attended a vigil in Ottawa for the victims of the crash.

He stood in silence alongside mourners and laid flowers at a memorial.

After Trudeau suggested that Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 was shot down, the New York Times published a verified video that showed the plane being hit.

Flight PS752 was travelling from the international airport in Tehran to Ukraine on the morning of January 8 but crashed mere minutes after takeoff, killing all 176 people onboard the plane.

Along with the 63 Canadians killed, other victims were from Iran, Ukraine, Sweden, Afghanistan, Germany and the U.K.

The same day that Canada and the world learned about the crash, the Prime Minister requested that the flag on Parliament Hills' Peace Tower be lowered to half-mast until further notice to honour the victims.

The 63 Canadians killed in the crash hailed from all over the country.

After speaking with the victims' families, Trudeau is scheduled to return to Ottawa for private meetings.
