A Mississauga teenager just landed the lead role in Mindy Kaling’s new Netflix comedy. Maitreyi Ramakrishnan is quickly becoming one of the newest faces to watch in Hollywood. Mindy Kaling shared the exciting news on Instagram, praising the young Ontario actress for standing out from the crowd.
"Meet Maitreyi Ramakrishnan! She was cast out of 15,000 people, you guys," Kaling wrote. Naturally, everyone wants to know more about the rising star.
We did some digging to see what we could find about the Mississauga native:
According to Entertainment Tonight Canada, Ramakrishnan is new to acting and will make her on-screen debut in Kaling’s untitled project as the character Devi, who Netflix described as “a modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage girl.” Devi is an overachieving high school sophomore whose short temper gets her into trouble.
The Mississauga teen beat out 15,000 responses from a worldwide open casting call. Kaling posted about the audition on her social media. Ramakrishnan had no agency representation when she booked the part.
Ramakrishnan is a student of the GTA's own Meadowvale Secondary School. Peel District School Board congratulated her on Wednesday.
Ramakrishnan keeps a pretty low profile on social media, with just over 2,000 followers on Instagram. That'll likely change soon enough, though!
This role may be her on-screen debut, but according to her social media, Ramakrishnan has been a part of a few theatrical productions at her school.
It also looks she knows how to dance!
The series is co-created, co-written and executive produced by Kaling and Lang Fisher, whose writing credits include hit comedy shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Mindy Project.
Details about the show are pretty sparse at the moment, but it is definitely exciting to see a young actress from Ontario get her big break.
