Police Caught A Base Jumper Climbing a Crane In Downtown Toronto Last Night
Another person just tried to parachute downtown.
Skydiving is a pretty extreme sport. However, one man attempted to take it a step further by attempting to jump off a crane in downtown Toronto with a parachute. A Toronto man’s thrill-seeking stunt was cut short on Sunday night after police detained him for breaking into a building and attempting to scale a crane so that he could jump off it.
According to Toronto Police Services, a man was arrested after illegally entering a building near Yonge and Yorkville. The suspect then climbed onto a crane, located at the top of the skyscraper, with a parachute in hand, he was ready to take skydiving to a whole new level.
However, the man was ultimately arrested before he could jump. The incident caused roads in the area to be shut down. Security on-site spotted the man at around 10 p.m. on Sunday.
What makes this situation even more bizarre is that it CBC.in Toronto! It got so bad that last year, the police issued an official warning to base jumpers. "It is the city. There are buildings, there are obstacles, and regardless of what someone's ability is, there is always that possibility for danger, things can happen," Constable Allyson Douglas-Cook told
"We strongly discourage this kind of activity in the city," Douglas-Cook added.
Back in May, a parachute wasnear Sherbourne and Rosedale Valley Road. People who saw the stunt were stunned, but according to the president of the Parachute School of Toronto, Adam Mabee, it happens a lot.
"It's probably more common than most people would think." He told CTV, "Usually it’s done very quietly and out of sight. Sometimes people do see it like this, but I think most of them happen without many witnesses."
Thankfully, no one was hurt during this incident, but police are reminding all daredevils to think twice before scaling a construction crane.
So, If you’re thinking about base jumping off a building in Toronto, which you shouldn't be, just try to remember these two things, it's not an original idea, and it's also highly illegal.
