It's no secret that Canada loves Starbucks. It's nearly impossible to resist the temptation of your favourite drink when you pass one by. Lots of Starbucks means lots of happiness, but it also means lots of plastic waste. Recently, there's been a huge push towards sustainability and environmentally-conscious packaging, and Starbucks has answered the call. Starbucks strawless lids will officially be hitting Toronto this month.

Starbucks informed Narcity that the strawless lids will be rolled out at locations across Toronto within the next few weeks. The rest of Canada can expect to see these innovative lids in 2020.*

The new, lightweight lids contain 9% less plastic than the current lid and straw, which is a huge milestone for Starbucks. The company plans to phase out plastic straws completely from over 30,000 locations worldwide by 2020. This shift will eliminate over one billion straws per year! Straws will be available upon request for those who need them.

While avoiding a straw may not seem like a big deal in the moment, it's a huge step towards a more sustainable way of enjoying Starbucks coffee and beverages.
