Dust off your goggles and gym shorts, Toronto fitness centres are making a comeback. The City announced on August 12 that it would be introducing an online reservation system for its swimming pools, weight rooms, and fitness centres. So, all you impulse exercisers are out of luck.

According to the City's press release, the new reservation option will allow people to book an indoor lane swim at any of its 29 pool locations.

It will also cater to weightlifters who will be able to reserve equipment at a select number of weight rooms and fitness centres across the city.

Currently, over 300 aquatic amenities in Toronto have been reopened to the public. The facilities all operate under the guidelines of the City's COVID-19 restrictions.

It's worth noting that fitness centres and weight rooms won't reopen in the City until August 17.

However, people are able to reserve their spots online today.

So, if you're itching to make a last-ditch attempt at getting a summer bod, now is not the time to procrastinate.

Indoor pools are open, but their capacity remains significantly reduced.

The amenity is currently allowing just 25 percent of its regular occupation to ensure COVID-19 physical distancing standards are upheld.

"City staff worked quickly to reopen the City's aquatic amenities as soon as they received the green light from the Province. While COVID-19 has changed many of our daily routines, in some areas, it has also helped us adapt and expedite our service delivery," Mayor John Tory said.

"I encourage people to consider reserving their indoor swim online in advance and making use of the expanded recreation services we have to offer," he added.

As of August 12, all of Ontario has moved into stage three of the reopening plan.

This has allowed dine-in restaurants, bars, movie theatres, and gyms to open their doors.

Indoor gatherings remain limited at 50 people and residents are still asked to practice social distancing and wear face coverings while in indoor spaces.
