Community members are speaking out after a Toronto mosque received a slew of hate messages threatening snipers and murder this weekend.

According to a statement from the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), hate messages were left at the downtown mosque on October 10.

The name of the place of worship has been concealed for security, and Toronto Police are currently investigating.

We need action now from the federal government to develop a national strategy on dismantling xenophobic groups.

The messages that were left threaten to "murder," stating that "we have soldiers who have experience as snipers", and including that "we have the guns to do a Christchurch all over again."

Since receiving the messages, NCCM stated that Toronto police are encouraging more vigilance at GTA mosques at this time, according to a tweet

John Tory released a statement on the incident, condemning xenophobia and hate.

"As a city and as individual Torontonians we must stand together to ensure that the Muslim community feels supported and that the places of worship they rely on are not at risk of becoming unsafe spaces."

Narcity has reached out to Toronto Police, who confirmed that enhanced patrols will be taking place.

"We will continue to have enhanced patrols in the areas identified, and will reassure members of the public that we have deployed available resources in those areas affected to ensure the safety of our communities."
