It looks like young adults weren't the only ones who gathered at Trinity Bellwoods Park this weekend. Photos of Mayor John Tory in the middle of a huge crowd appeared on social media this Saturday. The mayor later apologized for his actions, stating that he was trying to practice social distancing while in the area.

Throughout the weekend, thousands were reported to have flocked to the popular Trinity Bellwoods Park.

Some party-goers were even reported to have used nearby lawns as washrooms, as the public bathrooms within the area have yet to reopen.

Tory, who was photographed failing to wear his mask properly, claims he went to the park on Saturday after hearing reports of a large gathering.

“I want to apologize for my personal behaviour yesterday," Tory said in a statement on Sunday.

“I fully intended to properly physically distance but it was very difficult to do. I wore a mask into the park, but I failed to use it properly, another thing I'm disappointed about. These were mistakes that I made and as a leader in this city, I know that I must set a better example going forward,” he added.

Tory also reportedly stopped to talk to several people in the park to ask them why they were ignoring the city’s social distancing rules.

“The mayor went to Trinity Bellwoods Park last night as he thought it [was] important to talk to some of the people there and see why they were using the park the way they were,” Don Peat, Tory’s press secretary, told Global News.

On the same day that the mayor was spotted at the overcrowded park, he also released a statement on Twitter expressing his disappointment to those who were caught gathering in the area.

"It’s unfortunate and extremely disappointing that so many gathered in Trinity Bellwoods to flaunt the advice of our public health professionals," wrote Tory.

The mayor also noted that more police were present on the grounds on Sunday to ensure that this type of gathering wouldn't reoccur.

Tory had also called for a ticketing blitz back in March to punish residents for ignoring physical distancing bylaws and other lockdown restrictions.
