On Tuesday evening, it was confirmed that a TTC subway operator had tested positive for COVID-19. According to a statement issued by ATU Local 113, a union that represents most transit employees, a frontline TTC worker at the Wilson division was confirmed to have the virus on Tuesday, March 24, 2020. The driver worked on Line 1 before he went home sick last week. 

According to the union, the operator has not been to work since Monday, March 16, 2020.

It was reported that the employee left work shortly after starting their shift on Line 1 and has remained at home ever since. It is unclear at the moment how the operator came in contact with the virus.

Carlos Santos, the president of the union, confirmed that he’d spoken to the member who he says is “doing well.”

“While the case is still under investigation, ATU Local 113 wanted to update members as soon as possible. Our union continues to work with the TTC and Toronto Public Health on this case – we’ll provide you with more details on actions being taken, once available,” the union wrote in a statement.

TTC spokesperson Stuart Green also noted that the incident has not increased risk for its customers or employees. Subway operators work in cabs separated from the public that are sanitized daily. 

However, the transit agency is looking to identify a small group of workers who would've had close contact with the individual. 

The union is also cautioning its members to stay home if they feel unwell and continue to work towards sanitizing their vehicles. 

The TTC had sent out a similar warning to its employees last Thursday after a maintenance worker tested positive for COVID-19.

Stuart Green reported that the employee worked his last shift at Duncan Shop, where the transit agency works on bus rebuilds and overhauls.

Over 130 transit employees were exposed and put into self-isolation as a result.
