A sudden nationwide outage affecting Rogers mobile phone services has left customers in the dark. The telco company announced on Sunday that it was dealing with service outages across Canada with no estimated time of restoration. The Rogers outage has prevented many users from placing or receiving calls on their mobile phones or wireless home phone services, which included emergency calls to first responders.
UPDATE: In an updated statement to Narcity, Rogers writes, "Voice services are restoring with a very limited number of customers experiencing intermittent interruption to voice calls. Teams are working hard to fully resolve the issue and we sincerely apologize to our customers." Rogers also notes that as of Sunday night, 911 is available to all customers.
EARLIER: According to CP24, Rogers claims that the interference is affecting people using 2G or 3G services on the Rogers, Chatr, or Fido networks. Unsurprisingly, many customers were left confused and frustrated by the outage:
Toronto Fire Services, Toronto Police Service and Toronto Paramedic Service are all reporting that they have received phone calls to 911 that cut off the moment they answered. Dispatchers who attempt to follow up with such calls are being met with a busy signal on the other line, reports CP24.
Toronto Paramedics say that they are treating the faulty calls with the same protocol they would use for “unknown trouble” - travelling to the address with no other details and attempting to respond to them.
“We are working diligently to restore services as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience,” read a post on Rogers’ service update.
Rogers announced on Sunday evening that it was working on a solution to the problem. At the moment, the issue remains isolated and is only affecting call services. Text messages and data are working as normal.
