La Ronge RCMP have appealed to the public for assistance in locating a prisoner that has managed to escape from a correctional facility transport vehicle.
The inmate, who has been named as Grant Kenneth McKenzie, escaped from the vehicle at approximately 3:45 PM while the van was travelling through La Ronge, Saskatchewan. This is the second inmate to have escaped from an inmate facility in Saskatchewan, and connected to the town of La Ronge, in less than two weeks.
McKenzie, who is reported to be 30-years-old, was able to flee from an RCMP vehicle on Friday as police say the van was “non-secure.” The inmate was last seen in the area of Brown Street and La Ronge Avenue. He is described by police as being 5’8″ in height, with an average build, weighing 190 lbs. He also has short brown hair, brown eyes and has numerous visible tattoos.
The most recognisable tattoo is on the top of his head, where he has an image of a skull. He also has a cross on his upper left arm; a cannabis leaf on his right arm; and the word KAIDENCE on the right side of his neck. La Ronge police have urged anybody who sees a man matching this description to contact the RCMP with his whereabouts.
This is the second incident of this nature to take place in less than two weeks in Saskatchewan, as another inmate, Randy Timothy Venne, was able to escape from Besnard Lake Correctional Camp, about 150 kilometres south of La Ronge, on June 10. He was the third inmate to have escaped from the Besnard Lake facility in less than a year.
Venne was reported missing June 9, and he was reportedly seen walking along a highway in the early hours of the morning. The Pinehouse Lake RCMP were forced to alert the public that Venne was dangerous, and it was recommended that he should not be approached.
It took ten days for police to locate Venne, who was eventually recaptured in La Ronge, the same town where the latest inmate has gone missing. He was returned to custody, but police have declined to give any further details, including the sentence he was serving.
No official information has been released by La Ronge RCMP regarding the most recent escapee's expected whereabouts. The RCMP have not claimed McKenzie to be dangerous.
