Most Canadians are staying in their houses, but some are still trying to get home. That's harder than ever with so many travel restrictions now in place. Swoop Airlines is suspending its international flights, but it will work to bring its customers who are still abroad back to Canada.

In a March 19 statement, the company announced that starting on March 22, all of its international and transborder flights would be suspended until May 31, 2020. 

The airline will also be starting its own repatriation flights on March 23. They will work to bring over 2300 Swoop customers home from the United States, Jamaica, and Mexico.

Canadians who have booked trips to these areas any time before May 31 will have the option to reschedule or cancel their trips.

There will be 15 flights operating over three days to bring people back to Canada.

The airline is reaching out to any affected customers via email to provide updated info on how to re-book themselves onto these planes.

"These are extraordinary times, and we want to be sure our Swoop travellers are safe at home in Canada," Bert van der Stege, Head of Commercial at Swoop said in a statement.

Van der Stege continued, saying "Our priority is to bring Canadian travellers home, ensuring the safety of our travellers, crew and aircraft. We have put these suspensions and subsequent repatriation efforts in place to continue to deliver on that."

Prime Minister Trudeau announced on March 19 that the Canada-US border would be closed to non-essential travel by the end of the week.

In addition, only four airports across Canada will be accepting international flights.

Other measures are being taken to control the spread of COVID-19 through Canada, including banning gatherings of 50 or more people, non-essential businesses temporarily shutting down, and school and university closures.
