When you think of Canadian universities, you often think of the old stone buildings that surround a campus that has been in operation for at least a hundred years. However, with Canada constantly expanding as a nation, a variety of new universities have popped up around Canada in the last fifty years. In fact, some of them are so spectacular that these Canadian universities rank as some of the top young universities throughout the world.
The Young University Rankings of 2019, conducted by Times Higher Education, took 351 universities throughout the world that were fifty years or younger and ranked them through a variety of factors including industry income, research, and teaching.
Through this ranking system, they were able to conduct which new universities were considered some of the best. Three Canadian universities were part of this ranking.
The Canadian university that ranked the highest was Concordia University. Concordia University, which is located in Montreal, Quebec, was founded back in August 1974, which only makes the university forty-five years old.
Concordia ranked in the top 50% of all the universities that were placed in this ranking and scored one of the best in the 100-150th ranking bracket.
The University of Regina was ranked as the second best new University in Canada, scoring in the 151-200th ranking. One of the reasons why the University of Regina is considered one of the best worldwide is due to the fact that it offers a variety of perks for its students and allows students to partner with a variety of institutions during their studies.
Coming in third, the University of Northern British Columbia also was able to rank as one of the best young Universities throughout the world. Ranking in the 201-250th rank, the university prides itself of being research-intensive.
The University of Northern British Columbia has also ranked top three in the country's best small universities and is considered one of the top fifty universities within Canada.
While Canadian universities were among the rankings, they sadly didn't reach the top three best new universities in the entire world.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology came in first, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland came in second, and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore ranked as the third.
According to Times Higher Education, the University of Toronto ranks as the best university in Canada, ranking in 21st across the world.
