Canadians are getting a new feature in their Uber app that's designed to make trips with the ride-hailing company safer. The new Uber pin code helps riders ensure that they get into the right car. People across Canada can now enable this feature and get pin codes for their rides through the app.

As of January 7, the ride company is rolling out a new form of verification for riders and drivers in Canada that's all about safety.

With the new feature, users are able to have the option of getting a four-digit pin code through the app to give to their driver before starting each ride.

To turn on this feature you just go into your Uber app, go to settings and tap on "Verify Your Ride" then choose to use the pin verification.

You can choose to use it on every single trip you take or on just nighttime trips from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

If you use this feature, you'll get a unique four-digit pin code in the app when the driver is on their way to the pickup location.

When the car arrives you can tell the driver the code before getting into the car.

The driver has to put the code into their app for the ride to be verified and your trip to begin.

"We are constantly working and innovating to provide riders and drivers with the tools they need to help ensure a safe and reliable experience," said Sachin Kansal, Uber's Head of Safety Products, in a news release. "This new feature will provide peace of mind that you are getting into the right vehicle."

If you have the new verification method enabled, your trip can't start until the correct pin is put into the driver's app.

You'll know if the driver is your driver because after the code is put in you get a notification that your ride is verified.

The pin codes were first announced in September and then piloted in seven cities in December. Now the feature is rolling out across Canada and the U.S.

The company recommends that people use the information provided on a car's make and model, the license plate, driver's name and photo to confirm they're getting into the right car.

The new pin codes are an added layer of verification so that riders can have more peace of mind getting into their rides.

The feature will be made available to all Uber users in Canada by the end of the week.
