Just days into the new year, the world woke up to the news that US President Donald Trump had ordered an airstrike to take out Iranian military leader Major General Qassem Suleimani. The US & Iran's relations have been shaky, and despite the major action taken by the President, only two Canadian federal leaders have reacted to it.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh took to Twitter to share his response to the news, sharing it in both English and French.

"The US’ actions in Iran have brought us closer to another disastrous war in the Middle East. The Prime Minister needs to act quickly with other countries to de-escalate the situation and not be drawn into the path that President Trump is taking," Singh wrote.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did not respond to the news of Trump's attack. He and his family are still on vacation in Costa Rica, where they have been since December 20.

Conservative leader Andrew Scheer, who resigned in December, also has not released any official statement about the attack on Iran.

The only other party leader who shared a public response to the news was Bloc Quebecois leader Yves-Francois Blanchet. However, Blanchet did not write his own response but rather retweeted Robert DeNiro.

The original tweet includes a video of Trump made during Barack Obama's presidency and quotes him as saying "Our president will start a war with Iran because he has absolutely no ability to negotiate. He's weak and he's ineffective. So the only way he figures that he's going to get reelected and is sure as you're sitting there is to start a war with Iran."

The attack has already prompted a number of alarming trends on Twitter, with hashtags including #WWIII, #IranWar, and #TrumpsWar.

According to a statement from the US Department of Defense, "This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans."
