WestJet Cancels Half Of Their Domestic Flight Routes Due To COVID-19
They're going to focus on repatriating Canadians instead.
Travelling across Canada just got harder. In an announcement on Sunday, WestJet confirmed that it would be reducing domestic services by about 50 per cent, starting this week. WestJet flight cancellations have been shared on the company’s website, as they commit to repatriating stranded Canadians instead.
If you’ve got a domestic flight booked with WestJet next month, it could be worth double-checking your ticket.
In a statement on Sunday, the airline confirmed that it would be reducing their Canadian flight routes by approximately 50 per cent, beginning on Monday, March 23.
While the company reaffirmed it was still “committed to keeping critical economic lifelines open for the 38 communities we serve across Canada,” the notice explained that the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically reduced the demand for domestic services.
Select routes have been suspended starting on March 23, 2020 and lasting until at least April 21, 2020.
Although the airline confirmed that these adjustments are only a temporary measure, the notice acknowledged that this could also change.
“Further schedule adjustments are possible in the short term,” it concluded.
“Frequency may be reduced, but we pledge to be there for Canadians as long as possible to keep connections open and vital goods moving across our country,” WestJet said in the news release.
While many of the company’s domestic flight routes will be scaled back, operations tofrom abroad will be stepping-up a notch.
The airline has plans to operate 34 flights to international and transborder destinations, with the aim of bringing home as many Canadian citizens and residents as possible.
“WestJet will continue to add flights as the need is identified," the statement confirmed.
Speaking from his home on Saturday, Justin Trudeau praised airline employees for their hard work during the COVID-19 outbreak.
“I want to thank the staff from pilots to air crews, for their professionalism and dedication during a very difficult time for the industry, when people are worried for their jobs and futures, they are still stepping up to help,” he said.
The PM also acknowledged that, while the government and air services will do their best,will be able to get home.
Last week,announced a similar move, as they froze more than 40 domestic flight routes due to COVID-19 concerns.
