In a newly updated travel advisory, the Canadian Government is warning travellers to avoid parts of England today. Specifically, they advise Canadians to avoid areas of London and exercise a high degree of caution due to the increased risk of violence today. This comes as demonstrations are expected near the UK Parliament today.

In their advisory, the Canadian Government says "Demonstrations are expected to take place in London on March 29, 2019. Demonstrators will march in the Parliament’s vicinity, near the main government buildings on Whitehall and near Westminster Abbey." They also say that heightened security measures will be in place and that there is an increased risk of violence.

All of this is because today at the UK Parliament, demonstrations are expected over the controversial Brexit situation. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May is back in Parliament today to have the members there vote on the withdrawal agreement that will see the UK leave the European Union. However, this has been a big issue since the referendum back in 2016 which just barely decided that the UK would leave the EU with only 51.9% of voters supporting the leave.

Now today thousands of pro-Brexit protestors are expected to take over parts of London, prompting the safety warning from the Canadian government.

In their warning, the government advises that travellers avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and to also avoid the underground stations that are nearby the demonstration areas.

These include the UK Parliament area, on Whitehall, and near West Minster Abbey, which are all popular tourist stops for people visiting London.

The main concern is that demonstrations like this can quickly turn violent with major clashes between security forces and the protestors. They can also have a major impact on transportation in the affected areas.

In their advisory the government warns Canadians to do the following:

  • Avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings taking place
  • Follow the advice of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

It is also likely that pro-Brexit demonstrations will also be met with counter-protests, increasing the risk of clashes and violence in London today.
