Local police are constantly trying to incentivize their communities when it comes to reporting crime and knowing their options if they are ever in trouble. As a result, some pretty cringey campaigns end up ensuing. You probably don't need a reminder of last year's Ontario police lip sync videos considering they're probably burned into your mind forever. Though it seems British Columbia may have topped that all thanks to a terrifying moose costume.
Over in Kamloops, Crime Stoppers decided they needed a new mascot and settled on none other than "Anonymoose" who was created to generate local awareness of the service and "educate the public" according to Kamloops This Week. The pun is meant to highlight that anyone who calls in to report a crime is able to remain anonymous through the process and even earn a reward depending on the arrest. Though the campaign might have gone a little smoother if the mascot didn't look like an extra from 'Five Nights at Freddy's.'
The goal of 'Anonymoose' according to board member Erin MacKenzie, is for the mascot to be introduced into their "program and become more involved in community events." Meaning 'Anonymoose' will soon be arriving at a local Kamloops event near you to scare small children teach local youth about the work and importance of Crime Stoppers.
Naturally, the news spread far past just Kamloops and once Reddit got a hold of it, Canadians really let their opinions fly about Crime Stopper's newest mascot 'Anonymoose'.
It's definitely clear the moose's design could be refined a little, but it's worth remembering that Crime Stoppers is a non-profit charity linked to the RCMP. Meaning it's fair to assume they probably couldn't get away with using significant donor money on a "top of the line" moose costume.
Regardless, considering the amount of traction 'Anonymoose' has received online already, it's clear Kamloop's Crime Stoppers exceeded their publicity expectations. Now even people outside of Kamloops have been reminded that Crime Stoppers allows you to phone in and report a crime... 'Anony-moosely'.
