It's not news that our neighbours to the south, America, have been causing some stress for Canadians this summer. From a tariff war to tighter border controls, the North American countries have been on edge.
Well now, the U.S. President, Donald Trump, unexpectedly gave Canada a major shout out by total mistake. During a speech today, Trump completely flubbed his thank you to the Customs and Border Protection agents and paid tribute to the Canadian media instead.
This event is a "Salute to the Heroes of ICE and CBP"...but Trump keeps calling CBP "CBC."— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) August 20, 2018
Here, as @seungminkim noted and to much joy for those of us in Canada, is President Trump saluting "the heroes of... CBC" (he was getting the acronym for Customs and Border Protection wrong.) pic.twitter.com/x3F78nErc9— Sean Craig (@sdbcraig) August 20, 2018
The President was reading from a teleprompter which had a prepared speech when he accidentally mixed up the "CBP" for the "CBC", the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. While this is not uncommon for any politician, some have guessed that the "CBP" mixup for "CBC" on the teleprompter was purposefully written in.
Another journalist in attendance to the speech confirmed that while Trump was saying "CBC" the speech had actually prepared him with the correct acronym, "CBP."
Trump—who earlier in the same ceremony honoring Customs & Border Protection (CBP) introduced a Hispanic American immigration agent by noting that he "speaks perfect English"—continued to refer to the agency as "CBC" despite a teleprompter Trump is reading from spelling out “CBP.” pic.twitter.com/oiATLtB5p0— Anna Massoglia (@annalecta) August 20, 2018
While Canadians know that the CBC is the country's news source, CBC in the USA is also known for being the acronym behind the Congressional Black Caucus, a racial political organization made up of members of Congress.
Update: Trump said "CBC" 7 times, "CBP" 0 times, at event to honor ICE and CBP. https://t.co/p4rMa7lulU— Noah Gray (@NoahGrayCNN) August 20, 2018
Canadians were quick to poke fun at the President for his slip up, especially with his recent criticisms of our country. For someone who has a lot to say about Canada, he praised Canada's news network seven times throughout his speech.
As a Canadian I can’t imagine trump praising CBC— Landfrom (@landry_randolph) August 20, 2018

.@CBC, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, congrats! Trump has been honoring you non stop at event for the CBP.— Wajahat Ali (@WajahatAli) August 20, 2018
It may not be the first time that Trump did not follow protocol or mistakenly said the wrong thing, but this mess up is pretty bad.
Considering this was supposed to be an event thanking agents for their hard work, the least the President could do is not mess up.
