As of today, Canadians will use Facebook for more than just connecting with friends. Facebook Dating, the social media platform's brand new dating app, officially launches in Canada today.
On Facebook Dating, users create new Facebook profiles in the form of a dating profile, one that isn't shared with friends. You'll be able to access Facebook Dating within the Facebook website or app, but in a separate Messenger window.
Using their ultra-sophisticated algorithm, Facebook is determined to find you the perfect matches. They won't match you up with people you're already friends with on Facebook, but those who you share mutual friends with, and people who are part of similar groups and attend the same events as you.
The app also has many gender options including "trans man," "trans woman," and "non-binary/two-spirit."
Facebook is also committed to finding you long-term love instead of just casual hookups. The chat feature will support text only, so you actually get to know each other instead of just swap nudes. It also minimizes the risk of catfishing because it imports all of the personal data from your Facebook profile.
“The goal of the team is to make Facebook simply the best place to start a relationship online” Facebook Dating's product manager told TechCrunch. "We wanted a system that emphasizes consideration over impulse. We want you to consider more than that person’s profile photo."
