We all know that plastic is bad for the environment, while a super convenient thing for us humans it takes nature a long time to break down and it hurts wildlife before that.
Swedish furniture giant has announced that it wants to be more environmentally friendly by getting rid of a lot of different plastic products in its stores.
And it’s a long list of things.
Included on it are plastic bags, straws, plates, cups, freezer bags, bin bags, and plastic-coated paper plates and cups.
Basically if it’s plastic at Ikea it soon won’t be there anymore.
The company is working towards completely eliminating these products from all of its stores by the year 2020, we know that sounds like a long time but it’s 2018 right now so it’s actually less than 2 years away.
It’s part of a long-range goal by the company to only be selling products that are completely renewable or recyclable by the year 2030.
The company has made great strides towards that goal, with currently about 60 per cent of its products being renewable and another 10 per cent recyclable.
“Through our size and reach we have the opportunity to inspire and enable more than one billion people to live better lives, within the limits of the planet,” Torbjorn Loof, Ikes’s CEO, says.
So if you find yourself going to Ikea you may want to get in the habit of bringing your own bags.
