West Jet and Air Canada announced in the summer that they would be raising their prices on checked bags and luggage. Those higher prices officially went into effect today.
This is the first time either of the airlines has raised the prices on checked bags and luggage in the past 4 years.
Previously it cost $25 for your first checked bag and $30 for your second. Now both airlines are charging $30, an increase of $5 while the second bag will cost $50, a more steep increase of $20.
Both Air Canada and West Jet have said that increased operating costs, especially high fuel fees, are what has driven the price hikes while an expert says that it's getting increasingly harder for airlines to make a profit.
The average price for airfare in Canada currently $163.50 for a domestic flight, and $287.70 for an international flight, although there are other factors like length of the trip and ticket type.
New ultra-low-cost airlines are contributing to a lower average cost of airline tickets but in these cases, they charge even more for baggage than Air Canada and West Jet. On Swoop, the prices for your first checked bag range from $38 - 92 depending on if you purchase it in advance or at the counter.
The new higher luggage prices are officially taking effect today, just in time for the Thanksgiving weekend, a very popular travel time for students coming home from university and Canadians visiting family.
