Trudeau's approval rating as Prime Minister of Canada is now at 40 percent, an astonishing three points lower than US President Donald Trump's. Justin Trudeau's approval rating also slides behind that of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper back in 2015. At the time, Harper's rating was 47 percent. These approval ratings were obtained by an Ipsos poll conducted exclusively for Global News.
Last week, it was revealed that thousands of Canadians have signed a petition calling for Justin Trudeau’s resignation on the House of Commons e-petition platform. In the wake of the ongoing SNC-Lavalin scandal, it’s clear that Canadians are now losing faith in their Prime Minister’s leadership more than ever.
Canada’s PM has faced growing accusations that his government inappropriately intervened to protect Quebec-based engineering company SNC-Lavalin from facing criminal bribery and corruption charges. Since then, his progressive image has been tarnished and his popularity has plummeted.
According to a report by Global News, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seems to have sustained more damage from the SNC-Lavalin scandal than President Donald Trump accumulated from his extensive list of questionable actions.
According to the poll - which surveyed 1,002 Canadians this week - Conservatives would earn 40 percent of the vote among decided voters if an election were held tomorrow. The Liberal party would receive 30 percent of the vote, the NDP 21 percent, and the Bloc Quebecois 5 percent.
Darrell Bricker, the CEO of Ipsos Public Affairs, told reporters, "Whatever this SNC-Lavalin thing is, it seems to have settled in. We’re creating a new normal in which the Conservatives are consistently ahead of the Liberal Party."
“In spite of all the issues that they’ve had to deal with in the United States, the likelihood that the president of the United States will get re-elected is higher right now than the prime minister [of Canada] being re-elected,” Bricker said.
The poll also indicated that Trudeau is struggling to impress the two key demographics that propelled him into victory back in 2015: women and young people.
Currently, 40 percent of Canadian females say they would vote Conservative, as opposed to the mere 28 percent for the Liberals. Young voters between the ages of 18 and 34 are leaning toward Conservatives by 34 percent, just slightly favouring the Tories over the Liberals, who would earn 31 percent of the demographic's vote.
In fact, there is only one population of Canadians among which the Liberals would be elected into power: the university-educated. Compared to the 30 percent vote for Conservatives, 44 percent of university-educated Canadians approved of Trudeau and his Liberals.
"What’s happened is that the brand that Trudeau had — he had a strong appeal among young people, and there was a gender gap that worked in his favour — all seems to be gone," Bricker told reporters.
Trudeau has been the subject of many disparaging tweets over the course of his leadership. Recently, however, the content of the social media posts by critical Canadians has become increasingly severe in nature.

Justin Trudeau is the best Prime Minister Canada has ever had! ...said NO ONE EVER!! In fact, he is the worst ever! Entitled, smug, arrogant, dismissive, rude, obnoxious, liar, etc. etc. I can’t stand to hear him talk any more. He doesn’t answer a direct question. Disgusting!— Hans van der Laan (@HvanderLaanYYC) March 27, 2019
Least when Trudeau goes back teaching he can peek in on the history class to hear the teacher saying “ Justin Trudeau was the worst PM this country had, separated it like no other and gave away money like a drinking farmers wife after harvest” https://t.co/vpLMrL3Np3— Brad (@BLM0783) March 28, 2019
