If there's one thing the First Lady of the United States is an expert at, it's spending money - and lots of it. Last September, Melania Trump landed in Toronto for the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games. She also had visits scheduled with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Prince Harry.
Despite everything she had planned, Melania didn't even spend a single night in Toronto. She was there for about 10 hours, from just after 12 PM on September 23rd to around 10 PM, when she boarded her plane back to the Air Force base in Maryland. Within that time, though, she managed to rack up a $174,000 hotel bill, which is roughly $228,000 CAD.
Melania clearly spared no expense on hotel reservations at two of Toronto's hotels, the Ritz Carlton and the Sheraton. According to Quartz, the First Lady booked at least six separate rooms for her staff and herself. The charges ranged from $12,000 to $49,000, all of which were paid to "miscellaneous foreign awardees" instead of specific hotels. Keep in mind that these figures are calculated in USD.
On top of that, another $21,000 was spent on transportation during the visit. According to press reports obtained by Quartz, Mrs. Trump only visited with Prince Harry for about 20 minutes. She also delivered a one-minute speech in front of the American team competing in the games. She later watched the opening ceremony with Trudeau and his family from a VIP suite at the Scotiabank Arena.
When questioned, the First Lady's spokesperson had this to say: "What I can tell you is that when the President or First Lady travels, there are people who travel ahead on the advance team to ensure safety measures, medical care, communications, motorcade needs and logistics are all in place." Only the finest for the FLOTUS.
