With thousands of students living and commuting to campuses across Ontario every single day, it's important for students to feel safe on school grounds. However, a new survey that was conducted by the Ontario Government suggests that students aren't feeling as safe as they should be while attending classes on campuses in Ontario. In fact, the government survey shows that over 60% of Ontario students have been sexually harassed on campus.
160,000 students across Ontario were involved in this study and the results are frightening. With 63% of students claiming that they have been sexually harassed on campus at least once during their university career, it shows that more needs to be done in order to deal with this ongoing problem.
Since the data was released, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities Merrilee Fullerton is ensuring just that. The Ontario government has dedicated a $6 million grant in order to put more sexual violence programs in place on Ontario campuses.
This grant will ensure that more staff is trained, security cameras are properly put in place and that more lights are put in dimmer areas of Ontario campuses. The grant will also be dedicated to working on online safety apps that can help students feel safer while navigating campus grounds.
Along with this funding, the Ontario government is requiring all schools to review their sexual violence policies. Every university and college throughout Ontario will have to form a task force dedicated to this issue.
These universities and colleges will also have to report to the government every year to showcase how they are protecting and supporting students from sexual harassment.
This isn't the only risk that university students are facing while attending campus. Earlier this week, Narcity reported a third campus suicide had occurred at the Univerity of Toronto.
Students across the campus are now calling for better mental health resources, claiming that the resources that are currently available for students who need help mentally are inadequate.
Many are claiming that these long wait lines and lack of resources are harming students who need help the most.
