The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is alerting the public about a mass recall of oyster products from the marketplace, due to possible salmonella contamination. The CFIA has labelled the risk of contamination as a Class 2 hazard.
As per the notice, the oysters in question are made by The Great Little Harbour Seafood Company Ltd. - right now, the oysters are being recalled in Ontario and Nova Scotia, where the products are sold and distributed. But, the CFIA's statement says that the recall could also go national.
The notice says that oyster products with July 19, 2018, as their harvest date, and July 20, 2018, as their production date, should not be consumed. Specifically, the possibly contaminated oysters are the three-inch Small Choice and Standard types.
The CFIA warns that products may not look or smell contaminated, but could still cause severe illness if consumed. Recalled products should be thrown out immediately, or returned to the store where the product was purchased.
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause debilitating illness for up to several weeks. The CFIA's statement reads, "Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis."
Individuals with weakened immune systems, children, the elderly and pregnant women are particularly at risk for more serious health problems from salmonella poisoning.
