The Government Of Canada Has Issued A Travelling Warning For Areas Of Mexico

Travellers beware!

The Government of Canada has issued a new security alert for Playa del Carmen, Mexico and it may affect your vacation plans. Playa del Carmen and Mexico in general, is a hub for North American tourists. But after a set of recent events, the Canadian government is advising against Canadians traveling to this area.

After the U.S. Embassy closed its consulate in Playa del Carmen over security threats, Canada is updating its travel advisory to Mexico as well. On February 21st of last month, there was an explosion on a tourist ferry that injured 26 people, including three Canadians. Two weeks later, undetonated explosives were found on a second ferry on the same route.

The U.S. Embassy is advising Americans that the consulate is closed until further notice and the U.S. government employees are prohibiting travel to Playa del Carmen until further notice.

The government is also advising against travelling to a long list of Mexican states unless it is absolutely necessary.

Those states include:

  • Chihuahua

  • Coahuila (except the city of Saltillo)

  • Durango

  • Nuevo León (except the city of Monterrey)

  • Sinaloa (except the city of Mazatlán)

  • Sonora (except the cities of Hermosillo and Guaymas/San Carlos)

  • Tamaulipas.

  • Guerrero (including Acapulco but excluding the cities of Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo and Taxco)

  • Michoacán (excluding the city of Morelia)

  • Colima (excluding the city of Manzanillo)
