TIME's New List Of The Most Influential People On The Internet Reveals The Sad Truth About Our Culture

TIME's latest list of 25 Most Influential People on the Internet says a lot about the culture we live in.

Yesterday, TIME Magazine released their annual unranked list of the most influential people on the Internet. TIME selected the top 25 contenders for overall global impact on social media and their ability to generate news.

The results are a mixed bag, from viral sensations and YouTube stars to celebrities and political activists. There's even an anonymous person on the list, a conspiracy theorist known only by his username, "QAnon." One of the individuals on the list isn't even a real person, but a virtual avatar named "Lil Miquela," who has 1.2 million Instagram followers.

It's no surprise that there's a good handful of celebrities and public figures on the list as well, including Donald Trump, Kylie Jenner, Kanye West, Rihanna and - oddly - Busy Philips.

But, what's most surprising (and disappointing) about TIME's findings is the amount of YouTube celebrities and social media influencers on the list, which greatly outnumbers those who became influential for actually doing something important for the world - no offense.

The fact that the person who made Yanny vs. Laurel go viral is listed alongside Saudi Arabia's most prolific women's rights activists, Eman al Nafjan, is almost too tragic to believe.

Equally as depressing is the fact that the student survivors of the Parkland, Florida shooting, and iconic Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King are apparently just as influential as "fitfluencer" Kayla Itsines and Instagram mommy blogger @DiaryOfAFitMommyOfficial. Sigh.

It's also worth mentioning that a 6-year-old YouTube celebrity made into TIME's top 25 for having 14.5 million subscribers on his channel, "Ryan ToysReview." Other YouTube stars on the list are Logan and Jake Paul, Naomi Watanbe and Ariel Martin a.k.a. Baby Ariel.
