Offices are shutting down all over the country. Despite concerns about the rapidly spreading virus, California's state government has not granted large-scale approvals for its employees to telecommute. This may change soon. The state Department of Human Resources recently issued guidance on work from home opportunities.

The California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) spokesperson, Andrew Lamar, weighed in on last week's announcement, noting that the government is responsible for granting remote working requests. 

According to The Sacramento Bee, Lamar explained that CalHR has provided agencies with instructions on how to expand opportunities for telecommuting for employees who wish to work from home. 

CalHR also compiled an updated list of resources for employees and workers regarding paid leave, sick leave, maternity leave, unemployment, and more. 

"In the face of the coronavirus, the California Labor & Workforce Department Agency wants to keep workers, employers, communities, and families safe. What employees are entitled to may be confusing. The purpose of this chart is to make it easier to understand what resources may be available."

This announcement came shortly after California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that local organizations should postpone large events with 250 people or over.

Newsom said, "California has put out a new policy ending mass gatherings of 250+ people to slow the spread of coronavirus. We’ve been working with companies like Disney to meet it. @Disney has agreed to shut down their CA parks. Expect more to come..."

While these measures are directed at state employees, local companies are taking precautionary measures as well.

Qualcomm and Netflix are two global companies headquartered in California.

Both have announced work-from-home procedures, with Qualcomm closing their global offices through March 27 and Netflix, their Hollywood location.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, WarnerMedia, NBCU, Amazon, and Netflix are among the companies encouraging remote working policies at this time.
