Walmart Canada is investing $175 million into a brand new fulfillment centre in Surrey, British Columbia. The facility will be about 300,000 square feet - nearly the size of seven football fields.
The massive space will serve as a fulfillment, storage and distribution centre for Walmart's frozen grocery items, providing products to over 60 Walmart locations in British Columbia. Walmart Canada claims that the new facility will be zero-waste, with highly sustainable resources.
Walmart will be hiring 150 to 200 long-term employees for the new facility, plus 300 builders and engineers to make the space come to life. It'll require 14 to 18 months to build. With all the sustainability planning and design work that's required, construction is slated to begin in early 2021.
Walmart fulfillment centres offer a range of jobs, from associate to management level. Fulfillment associates typically work shifts from 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The role has many physical requirements, from standing for long periods of time, sorting, lifting and moving merchandise throughout the facility.
Walmart provides on-site employee training, and every job at the fulfillment centre comes with a variety of perks and benefits. Some of these include frequent paid breaks, competitive hourly wage, yearly benefits, and opportunity for a healthy work-life balance.
Walmart Canada will also be seeking and offering employment opportunities to young talent from universities and colleges in Greater Vancouver.
Walmart also claims that employees in every department have "unparalleled career mobility, training, learning and development opportunities, and the ability to shape their own careers."
Walmart Canada currently employs 4,500 people across Canada at their fulfillment centres in Mississauga, Calgary and Cornwall.
