After loving Netflix's original To The Bone, I decided to start a show a friend recommended to me. Cue obsession.
Atypical is a brand new Netflix series that was released not even a week ago. It follows the story of Sam, who is an 18-year-old with autism. With the help of his psychiatrist, Sam goes on a quest for his independence and seeks out a girl for the first time in his life. This show takes you on the journey of Sam actually living his life, and feeling grown up.
You may think this series would be super sad, however that's not true. It's really funny and actually made me laugh out loud a few times.
This series made me more aware of autism and what they go through on a daily basis. It's definitely not a documentary, but that doesn't mean it doesn't feel real. The struggles that autistics can face daily are approached lightly, which sometimes Netflix series don't usually do. All of Sam's small victories are celebrated by those on screen and us watching. We really do feel like he's a friend to us. But above all, the series is hilarious. Sam doesn't realize how funny he is, and that's the best part.
I have a special kind of love for Sam's sister. Even though it's his little sister, she takes her role as his leader very seriously. Their relationship is adorable, and when she's not looking out for him she's messing with him. And it's actually hilarious.
The series is 8 episodes which are all about 30 minutes. It's a shorter series, but that doesn't mean it lacks information at all. It's easy to binge watch it all in one day, because how else would you watch it?! It's definitely worth putting your life on hold for.
There is no doubt you'll fall in love with Sam's world, that's for sure. So cancel your plans this weekend and watch Atypical. You won't regret it and your heart will grow bigger.
