Nutella Secretly Changed Its Recipe And People Are Going Nuts

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.Ā Apparently the makers of Nutella don't know what that means.

The chocolate hazelnut spread is smooth, creamy, chocolate-y, and it can be eaten straight from the jar - no spoon needed.Ā It's perfect. It's delicious. And it definitely shouldn't be messed with.

But the manufacturers of Nutella think differently.Ā For reasons unbeknownst to us, Nutella has changed their recipe, and fans of the creamy hazelnut spread have descended into madness.

I mean.... should I even get out of bed today? #BoycottNutella

The change was first noticed by a sharp-eyed GermanĀ consumer group, who revealedĀ that Nutella now contains 8.7 per cent powdered skimmed milk, compared to 7.5 per cent before.

It's already a well-known fact that Nutella is more than half sugar, but the Hamburg Consumer Protection Centre also pointed out that the spread now containsĀ 56.3 per cent sugar, up fromĀ 55.9 per cent.

ā€œAs the colour of the new Nutella is lighter, we are working on the assumption that skimmed milk powder was added at the expense of cacao,ā€ the consumer group said.

The result of the change is pretty much a sweeter version of the Nutella we all know and love, with a lighter shade of brown.

But in a world where most companies are trying to reduce their sugar content in order to appeal to more health conscious consumers, the change hasn't been warmly welcomed. And Ferrero,Ā the makerĀ of Nutella, is currently in damage-control mode.

In a statement, Ferrero confirmed that it did "fine-tune" the the recipe but assured customers that they should notice no difference in the taste or quality of the product.Ā

Unfortunately for Ferrero, the reassurance did little to calm angry Nutella-lovers. And really, who can blame them? Don't fix what's not broken.Ā

But while the recipe may look a little different, and #NutellaGate may have already taken over Twitter, we're confident our tastebuds will still loveĀ this creamy, hazelnut-y spread -Ā even with the change.
