Over 400 Car Crashes Were Reported In Ontario During Last Night's Snow Storm

It was a rough start to winter for Ontario drivers last night after hundreds of crashes were recorded on the province’s first day of heavy snowfall this season. Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP reported an astounding number of collisions on Tuesday morning while stating that accidents are continuing to happen due to reckless winter driving.

“We’ve investigated at least 400 crashes in the last 24 hours. There are 24 crashes on the go as we speak, and that does not include all the vehicles which have spun out and lost control on their own."

Environment Canada issued a special weather advisory for Toronto on Monday evening as significant snowfall began to hit the city.

Toronto’s Winter Operations Twitter account also sent out a tweet, letting drivers know that salt trucks would be out all day, to ensure that roads were as easy to navigate as possible.

However, despite their best efforts, drivers still struggled to adjust to the conditions.

Thankfully, Schmidt reported that he was “not aware of any serious injuries as a result of a crash, obviously, there are those that people do and don’t want to talk about because they were going too fast. Road conditions may play a factor, but driving plays the ultimate factor, and driver error would be to blame in nearly all of those 400 crashes.”

According to The Weather Network, officials are still warning drivers this Tuesday to leave extra time to account for this unusually early winter mess. Toronto smashed its new daily snowfall records during Monday's onslaught.

Toronto's Pearson Airport reported getting a whopping 14 cm of snow which is the most substantial amount of snowfall for the city this early in the season before November 11th

So, if you’re driving today, please make sure to exercise a high degree of caution.

The snow may have calmed down, but roads are still slippery. It is vital that you give yourself plenty of extra time to get where you are going instead of rushing and causing further accidents. Drive safe.
