Ontario Social Distancing Ticket Was Given To A Woman Who Was Standing Too Long In A Park

Dog-walkers beware. An Aurora woman is claiming that she was given an $880 Ontario social distancing ticket for taking her dog and baby for a stroll in Edward Coltham Park. Roxana told Narcity that the entire situation left her feeling "shocked, scared, confused, and genuinely humiliated."

In a Facebook post, Roxana explains that she was walking her dog and child along a park trail when she noticed an elderly group walking towards her.

The new mother claims she then briefly stepped into a nearby gazebo to allow the seniors to pass.

However, once she resumed her walk, she was quickly approached and fined by a Town of Aurora Bylaw Animal Control officer.

"The officer got out of the car and proceeded to ask me why I was in the park. I responded that I was walking my dog, at which point I was asked if I had I.D., which I responded to with No, I do not. He asked me all my information, and I cooperated with him," the 29-year-old wrote in her post.

"He then asked if I knew the parks were closed. I said yes, I did, as I literally stared at the caution tape on the jungle gym dead ahead of me. With that, the bylaw officer said he was issuing me a ticket for $880 because I knew the park was closed, and I was standing around too long," she added.

The Town of Aurora's website states that while parks and their amenities are closed, trails are open for public use.

"The Town of Aurora trails are open for use, and residents may utilize the pathways to walk through the parks. Please practice social distancing when using Aurora's trails and do not use park benches and picnic tables and avoid all high touch surfaces on your journeys," an excerpt from the site reads.

Narcity reached out to Roxana, who revealed that she "thought that I was doing what I was supposed to be doing."

"I was attempting to use the pathway responsibly and physical distance to keep both others and my family safe from COVID."

Incidents of hefty social distancing fines have been occurring ever since the province went into lockdown.

Earlier this month, an Ottawa man was dealt an $880 ticket for walking his dog alone in Britannia Park.
