By now we all know TLC had it wrong, you should definitely go chasing waterfalls! And this small but powerful Ontario waterfall hike is super easy to chase down. A quick 1 km hike will lead you to Oxtongue Ragged River Falls which borders Algonquin Provincial Park. Just under 3 hours from Ottawa and Toronto, this is a summer day trip you won’t want to pass up.
Parking is available just off of Highway 60 near the edge of Algonquin Park. From there, you take a short, clearly marked gravel path to the top of the waterfall. Washrooms and additional hiking trails are also accessible from the gravel path.
What it lacks in height and width, the Ragged River Falls makes up for in power. The rapidly rushing white waters are a force not to be reckoned with. However, it’s not uncommon to find people kayaking through the rapids, leading them into the calm river below.
While it is possible to get up close to the falls, you should always proceed with caution as the rocks can be quite slippery. If you’d rather take in the beauty of the falls from a safe point, there are plenty of higher up, fenced-in lookout spots to sit and snap a few pictures for the ‘gram.
With it’s close proximity to Algonquin Provincial Park, there’s no shortage of incredible scenery to explore. So, grab your BFF and start chasing those falls.
