Ontario's Emergency Orders Were Just Extended Until June 9

If you were hoping to start your summer off with a bang, you might be waiting a little while longer. The provincial government has just announced that it will be extending Ontario's emergency orders into the first two weeks of June. Ontario won't see the end of lockdown until at least June 9.

In a press release, Ontario announced that emergency orders, such as the closure of some establishments and prohibiting public events will be extended until June 9.

Social gatherings will be restricted to groups of five people, and deployment rules will stay in effect for long-term care homes, retirement homes, and women's shelters.

Ford stressed earlier this month that it was still too early to raise the maximum limit on Ontario gatherings from five to 10. This means that seeing your friends will still have to wait.

When it comes to summer plans, it looks like those will have to also be put on hold.

These orders also include keeping outdoor amenities, such as pools and outdoor playgrounds, closed for the time being.

"We are extending these emergency orders to protect the health and safety of all individuals and families as we begin to gradually and safely reopen our province," Premier Doug Ford said in a news release on Wednesday.

Ontarians will also have to hold off on dining out as bars and restaurants will remain restricted to takeout and delivery.

The Ontario government first declared a provincial emergency on March 17, 2020, under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.

However, the province received some hopeful news this week when the government announced that 287 new cases of COVID-19 were reported across the province on May 25.

This is the lowest number that the province had seen since March 31, when 260 new COVID-19 cases in Ontario were reported.
