Besides visiting your favorite characters and spending half your retirement funds, Disney is infamous for one other key thing: basically walking a half marathon without even meaning to. If you didn’t count your steps, were you even at Disney?
For those of us with tight calves or a bad knee, the Mouse God smiles upon us—Disney’s new Skyliner Gondola system is opening next week, September 29th!
The new state-of-the-art gondola system will whisk you across the skies above the park as if Peter Pan himself just sprinkled some pixie dust on you.
The new system will conveniently connect Hollywood Studios and the International Gate at Epcot to the several Disney hotels, including the Art of Animation, Caribbean Beach Resort, Century Resort, and the new Riviera Resort opening in December.
In typical Disney fashion, some of the gondolas are themed and will feature iconic characters like Nemo, R2D2, Stitch, and more favorites. Ah yes, you can already hear the screams of upset children not getting the character they wanted…
While the gondolas do not feature air conditioning, Disney has reassured guests that they will have significant airflow. With a total of six Skyliner locations for boarding, you’ll want to pay close attention to where each line leads.
If you end up a “beginning” or “end of the line” location, you’ll have to get off whether you meant to end up there or not. You can always get back in line and board again, but you don’t want to wait precious seconds of your vacation in more lines than necessary!
The Skyliner fleet boasts 300 cabins, and Disney is estimating to push out around 4,500 guests per hour. Each gondola fits about 10 people, and will cruise through the skies at 11 mph.
At a height of 60 ft, the view is sure to impress, and ride times are estimated to last between 5 and 15 minutes, giving you plenty of time to rest your aching feet and admire Disney from a different angle.
