Finding affordable places to eat in Ottawa isn't always easy. One of your friends always bails because they're broke AF right now, plus none of you can ever agree on where to go grab a bite.
So for your sanity, taste buds, and pleasure, I've come up with a list of 12 cheap eats that are delicious and affordable. It'll probably still be a miracle if all of your friends can agree on a restaurant, but who said anything about only going to one?
SuzyQ Doughnuts, 969 Wellington Street W
Known as Ottawa's famous donut connoisseur, SuzyQ has the most unique seasonally changing flavours. There's nothing that hits the spots quite like a fluffy, perfectly glazed, and beautifully topped piece of baked heaven. Every melt-in-your-mouth donut is $2.00, but honestly, good luck not buying every single one. You won't regret these gourmet treats.
Kettleman's Bagel Co., 912 Bank Street
These award-winning Montreal-style bagels are the best you'll ever have – ever. They have a variety of options for you to choose from, but I personally love to kick-start my day with a classic, unbeatable $4.99 breakfast bagel. You can indulge in tons of yummy, cheap treats here: TLC sandwich ($5.89), pizza bagel all-dressed ($4.29), bagel dog ($4.19), apple turnover ($3.19), and SO MUCH MORE gourmet, old-style goodness! If you're from Ottawa and have yet to try Kettleman's, what are you even doing with your life?
OCCO Kitchen & Bar Downtown, 160 Bay Street
If you've got a hankering for delicious, crispy fries, nothing beats dipping OCCO Kitchen's Garlic Herb Fries into their amazing Chipotle Lime Mayo for only $4.50. You can also try their Candied Bacon Caesar Salad as a side for $5.95. If you've got just a TINY bit more to spare, then head here for the ultimate tacos ranging from $6.95 to $7.95. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
Bite This, 181 Richmond Road
This adorable shack sells every kind of food creation you can think of. However, their Big Honkn' Sausage is so delicious, you'll definitely wonder why it's under $6.00. You can also have one of their flavourful sandwiches with a side and a drink for only $5.00. This deal really can't be beat!
Kochu, 266 Preston Street
I can't even choose what to talk about with this Korean sushi restaurant, so I won't. Just promise me you'll go if you're broke or not, because their food is absolutely delicious. Plus, most of their veggie sushi rolls are under $6.00.
Red Apron, 564 Gladstone Avenue
This resto-cafe has unreal healthy breakfast options plus sweet and savoury baked goods for under $6.00. Not to mention, their awesome daily quiches are only $4.95, and a small veggie soup of the day is $4.50. Enough said.
Ahora, 307 Dalhousie Street
If you're down for a BOMB, hearty Mexican soup, you've gotta try Ahora's slurp-worthy tortilla soup for $5.25. If you're willing to literally spend a dollar more, you can add on their incredible tacos. Colourful decor, great ambiance, refreshing margaritas, authentic and affordable fare - how could you go wrong at this award-winning fan fav?
Cozmos Souvlaki, 196 Greenbank Road
In my personal opinion, this is the best place to eat in Ottawa – ever. I kid you not, this is the best Greek food you'll ever have. Well, unless you've been to Greece. But whatever. All of their pitas are under $6.00 - wrap your head around that (pun not intended).
El Camino, 81 Clarence Street
This is the hottest spot in town to get tacos. To satisfy your late-night munchies, head over after 10:00 PM on Tuesdays for select $4 tacos and $3.50 Jameson.
Pour Boy Pub, 495 Somerset Street W
If you're looking for good ol' pub grub, check out Pour Boy's happy hour, every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. As long as you have their weekly Insta password, you can enjoy delicious 1/2-price apps (except for wings) with the purchase of a drink. Grab some friends, order a selection of starters, and go crazy while saving money!
Lois 'N' Frima's Ice Cream, 71 George Street
A staple of the iconic ByWard Market, this ice cream shack is the perfect addition to a warm summer day. They sell more than just ice cream, actually a lot more, however they're known for their homemade serves. You're sure to find your perfect scoop for under $6, and you can bet that it'll be worth every single penny.
Shawarma Palace, 464 Rideau Street
For the veggie lovers out there, Shawarma Palace is your new go-to! From baba ganouj and garlic potatoes to fatoush and tabouli, who says you can't eat healthy and hearty for under $6?
