Amazon announced today that they'll be opening a gigantic new fulfillment facility in Ottawa's eastern suburb of Orléans. The facility will be 1 million square feet in size, and will require a workforce of about 600 full-time employees.

From day one, employees of the new facility will be granted competitive hourly wages, medical, vision and dental coverage, a group RRSP, stock options, and performance-based bonuses.

Before the facility opens its doors and becomes fully operational in 2019, the massive space will require a 1,500-person construction team to get built. Meaning that the Ottawa facility alone will provide more jobs than all of Amazon's Ontario employees combined.

Amazon hasn't announced when the hiring process for the Ottawa facility will officially begin. But, there will be hundreds of Fulfillment Associate positions to apply for. According to Amazon, "associates at this facility will pick, pack, and ship large items like household decor, sporting equipment and gardening tools."

As an Associate, there's a range of Amazon services that you can work for, including Amazon Prime, Amazon Fresh and Amazon Pantry. This video shows you the average day in the life of a Fulfillment Centre Associate, and it actually seems pretty cool:

The Ottawa facility will be Amazon's fifth in Ontario. Amazon currently employs 2,000 full-time associates at its existing facilities in Brampton, Mississauga, and Milton. Amazon has over 6,000 Canadian employees, in corporate offices, development centres, and other facilities across the country.

On Amazon's careers page, the starting hourly wage for full-time Warehouse Fulfillment Associates in Canada is $14.25. Associates also get to take advantage of these perks:

  • Health care benefits, starting day one
  • Holiday and overtime pay (overtime pay starts after 40 hours per work week!)
  • Paid time off
  • Maternity and Parental leave benefits
  • Restricted Stock Units (RSUs)
  • Employee discount
  • We also offer flexible work schedules for associates who are in school

Ottawa's Mayor is thrilled about the opportunities that Amazon's fulfillment centre will bring to the city. “After working closely with Amazon to grow its presence in our city, I’m very pleased they have chosen Ottawa to establish its new fulfillment centre. This is a critical investment in our local economy and our community, which will provide significant employment opportunities for Ottawa residents.”
